Dance and Math Concepts

Our little Superstars are enjoying our Artist in Residence this week. They are adding to the Spring performance of, The Stinky Cheese Man, with a little dance!! :)

We continue with our math concepts this week of: Geometric Shapes, buying and selling with quarters, nickles, dimes and pennies; Adding and subtracting, and finally survey and pictographs!

This group of students were intructed to create a creature with two rules...all SIDES and EDGES of the shapes had to touch! This turned out to be a great project and showed students that they needed to pull together collaboratively to come to a solution on the shapes.

Practicing adding and subtracting with money.

Board games to practice subtraction and addition facts.

Students were introduced with the concept of Pictographs. They took a survey of favorite cartoon and food of other students, then created a pictograph using the data they collect!

Exploring Science

This week the Superstars have had some hands on Science. We started exploring the layers of the ocean, and learning what Sea creatures live within those layers. Here the students are using their prior knowledge of the different layers and making a poster of them! We were really impressed with what they already knew!

They did a GREAT job!

Sink and Float

We began our Science table this unit with: sink and float, shell sorting, and learning about the waves of the ocean. Students are loving adding and taking away weight to different items to see if they will sink or float.

Butterflies
Our Butterflies are already making some changes! We discussed what a life cycle is, and made a diagram of the life cycle of our very own Butterflies.

Making observations

Sketching our changes.

The Superstars have been learning a lot about the Rainforest. We went in depth about the different layers of the forest such as the understory, canopy, emergent and the forest ground layers. Students really enjoyed working together to create a superstar rainforest in our own room!

We learned the Butterflies live in the emergent layer of the rainforest. We are currently growing our own Painted Lady butterflies. The Superstars are so excited to watch these little ones grow!

Creating a class poster on ways to save the planet.

Superstars hard at work, saving one tree at a time!

Enjoying a good book together.

Apollo Egg Drop

This week the Superstars finished up their space unit with an Apollo egg drop. Students created their own space capsules, filled it with cushion, an egg, and then dropped them from a 5 foot ladder. (The rainy day made it even more exciting and interesting). We had a half and half result of what eggs lived, and what eggs did not. But the Superstars just loved this project!

Superstars buying and selling paper airplanes. We discussed how shape affects the flight of the planes, as well as if you add weight! We had paper flying all around the room, but oh boy was it fun!

Planet Research

The past few weeks the Superstars have been doing research on the eight (nine including Pluto) Planets! We did Paper Mache on balloons, painted them the color of the planets, and then did research in the computer lab on each planet. The students just loved this project, and even "felt like a big kid" doing the research on their own!

Pluto

Neptune

Uranus

Saturn

Jupiter

Mars

Earth

Mercury

Venus

They all did such a great job!

The Superstars created their own planet on the Science table. Here they are comparing and contrasting their planet to Earth, using a Venn diagram.

Smart Board Phonics. Here students are practicing spelling and synonyms.

One more week until Spring Break...see you all Monday! :)
